I started a small garden this summer with hopes to expand it with each season of new yummy vegetables and add a plethora of compost to the soil. I read a little about what I could use and what I shouldn't, which led to a brief disagreement with my husband over lettuce with olive oil on it... could it be composted? He said no, because of the oil. I asked if we could compost olives and on it went... So into the compost the lettuce went! (I always win!)
Anyway, I made a barrell for the compost. It spins around to turn it (quite a nifty contraption, if you ask me!). But now, in light of keeping more trash out of the landfill, what else can be composted?
Well, I found an interesting and entertaining blog that has added a great deal of items to my list of compost! I had really been wondering what to do with my dryer lint!

Also, here is a picture of my compost barrell!
Don't you need some insects and worms for composting? when Cory was growing up they would compost. He even mentioned your paper towel dilemma and said throw it in the compost. (although I'm not so sure) At his house the compost was a hole in the ground with some sort of lid on it. Toss out your refuse and stir it with a rake.
ReplyDeleteI also think you need some grass or leaves in it as well. Although you've probably read more on it than I have. I don't even have a balcony :)
Jon puts the grass in it after he mows and your mom has always supplied Lynda with an excess of leaves every year so I have used some of those. I haven't heard of needing worms or anything. I will look into that.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading a post from someone who wanted to donate his/her old pillows (disgusting btw) and didn't want to throw them away. A reader commented and said if she bought feather or cotton pillows, she would toss the stuffing in the composter. Seems like a good idea.
ReplyDeleteAre you still getting leaves from my mom? Or was that from the house on Geraldine?
